Suburban Propane - Price Gouging
We received an introductory rate last year that was reasonable so we went with Suburban for our propane. We are on a plan where we pay monthly year around so there isn't as large a burden during the winter. For the second time in a year, we were advised that our monthly payment had gone up.
I looked at a government historic pricing website to see what prices were doing and saw that during the last couple months, prices have been lower than they have been since 2007 so I was confused as to why my price was going up.
I called to speak to customer service and was told that the national rate doesn't necessarily mean the regional rates are that low. I then told her that I just got a quote that was 82 cents less a gallon than theirs. I was advised that this was an introductory rate and it would likely go up like theirs after a year. I called the other company back and confirmed that this was not an introductory rate and it was not.
Bottom line is they give you a decent rate to start with the intention to keep raising their rates. They have you sign a 3 year agreement so they can hit you for a $150.00 fee when you cancel. They also charge you $1.00 a gallon to pump out the propane that is in your tanks when you cancel so you get reimbursed 1.00 a gallon less than what you paid. They also require you to be an auto-fill so you can't just run your tanks dry to avoid paying as large a fee.
Suburban is completely unethical and I would stay away from them.
Reason of review: Pricing issue.
